W. Monte Nusbaum passed away on Thursday, December 8th at his home in San Marcos, Texas with his wife Nancy, son Joshua, and daughter Jessica by his side after fighting cancer for over four years. Monte was born William Monte Nusbaum in San Marcos on February 25, 1958, to Delrose Jarisch Nusbaum and Nicholas Paul Nusbaum, Sr.
He worked most of life starting at the age of 11 in a gas station. Over the years Monte worked at the San Marcos Telephone Company as a lineman; owned Monte’s Wrecker Service for many years; was an auto mechanic; worked at Texas State University as a power plant mechanic for almost 20 years; drove buses for special needs students at the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District (one of his favorite jobs); and drove buses for Transdev, a shuttle contractor at Texas State University. If someone called him to help them, he was there.
Monte loved to hunt with his father and brother, and later his son and grandson. He fished, gardened, bowled, and helped the kids in 4H and FFA with their animal projects. He positively impacted the lives of many of his son’s and daughter’s classmates and friends when he coached their baseball and softball teams. Many still call him “coach” to this day. Before getting sick Monte played adult slow pitch softball with his son.
He never met a stranger – Monte made friends everywhere he went. At their vacation home in Rockport, Texas he held seafood boils and barbecues for the neighborhood friends. Whenever someone new moved into the neighborhood, he walked over to introduce himself and invited them to the neighborhood parties.
Survivors include his wife Nancy Jungman Nusbaum, son Joshua Nusbaum, daughter Jessica Nusbaum, daughter-in-law Abby Nusbaum, three grandchildren Emerson, Emma and EllaMay Nusbaum, sister Linda Allen, brother Nick Nusbaum (wife Sharon), and many nieces and nephews. Monte is preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Dennis Allen, and niece Dennise Allen.
A Memorial/Celebration of Life is being planned and will be announced soon. Monte was an avid Harley-Davidson motorcycle owner/rider in recent years and in lieu of flowers the family encourages you to donate to the Guardians of the Children Hill Country Chapter-Texas. Gochillcountry.com. This organization is powered by motorcycle riders who love helping kids, primarily abused children.
“I don’t ride my bike to win races,
Nor do I ride to get places,
I ride to escape this world.
I ride to find peace with myself.
I ride to feel free,
And I ride to feel strong.”
