Katie Ann (Thornton) Hager passed away on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2020, in San Marcos, Texas, at the age of 65. A private memorial gathering will take place at a future date.
Katie was born on Aug. 1, 1955, in Long Beach, California, to Grover and Mildred Thornton. The family moved from California to Texas in 1968, where Katie graduated from high school in Midland. She earned a degree in floral design from the Cliff Mann Floral School in Denver in 1973 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos in 1979.
Katie was a landscape architect and she and her ex-husband Robert Hager operated a retail nursery and tree service in the San Marcos area for many years. She was at her happiest tending to her gardens and houseplants. Katie also was an excellent cook who enjoyed preparing meals for family and friends on special occasions.
Katie is survived by her son, Nathan Hager; 2 granddaughters, Louise and Mae Hager; sister, Virginia Kammerdiener; brothers, Jim and Bob Thornton; nephews and nieces: Jennifer Smith, Jesse Kammerdiener and James Thornton Jr.; and her longtime friend, Dennis Meister. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grover and Mildred Thornton, and a nephew, Zachary Thornton.
