Hugh McKissick Obituary

Hugh Monroe McKissick was born in Pasadena, Texas on February 18th, 1939. He was a fun-loving precocious child who was full of curiosity and stubbornness – which we are sure drove his parents crazy.

At the age of 18 he took an adorable 15-year-old girl, Carole, to the movies. Two years later they were married. 62 years later, they have had a life well lived. They are each other’s best friend and even though the road was not always easy, it was a marriage filled with love. Six years into their marriage they had three kids under the age of four. Even though they often said that they had no idea what they are doing – they were just kids themselves. They showed us what it was like to be loved and to love.

Hugh was a man of many names: Hugh, Hughey, Sonny, Dad… but by far his most favorite was Pawpaw. He took the responsibility of being a father very seriously. He was a ‘there’s no crying in baseball’ kind of dad. He raised his three children with grit, determination, and unconditional love. But oh, how he embraced having grandchildren without the responsibilities of raising them. The love he had for his six grandchildren and three great grandchildren was endless. He enjoyed spending his time with them fishing, camping, having tea parties, and sharing stories.

And what a storyteller Pawpaw was. Everything reminded him of a story and at times he could not finish the story because he was laughing too hard. At every family meal there were stories. Sometimes the same stories that he shared at a previous family dinner. But it did not matter – his stories were captivating no matter how often he told them. He reminisced about his childhood through his stories. He also lost a finger wrestling an alligator, or was it a shark? Depends on which grandchild you ask.

Hugh never met a stranger. He truly loved life. He is survived by his wife, Carole. His son Michael and wife Keli McKissick, their children Chase and Megan McKissick; his daughter Tina and husband Jeff Calaway, their children Mitchell and wife Ashley Calaway, Lauren and husband Scott Ford; his daughter Felice and husband Steve McCreary, their children Sophie and Collin McCreary and Kat Crowe; his great-grandchildren Marcus, Lucas, and Jade Calaway; his sister-in-law Sherrie Smith; his brother-in-law Bob Hayes; sister Sharon and husband Danny Hall; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Hugh was preceded in death by his parents Houghston and Wilma McKissick, sister Nelda Hayes, and granddaughter Kelsey McCreary.
