Dr. Elizabeth Mary Makowski passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 7th in San Marcos, Texas. She was born to Anthony and Helen Banaszynski on March 13, 1951, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and was the younger sister of Dorothy Bertz. After graduating Milwaukee High School, she earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Master’s of Arts in 1976. She earned an A.M. in History from Harvard University in 1977. After several years in academic publishing, she earned a Doctorate in History from Columbia University in 1993. She was a Professor of History at Texas State University from 1993 until 2019, and was the author of five widely acclaimed books on medieval culture; in 2007, she won Notre Dame University’s History of Women Religious Distinguished Book Award. Prominent among historians internationally, she gave lectures in Canada, France, Germany, and the UK, and she was the recipient of several fellowships, awards, and honors. She is survived by her husband, Roger Boylan and daughter Maggie. She was preceded in death by her sister.
