Charlotte Laughlin Obituary

Charlotte Marion Coleman Laughlin passed away peacefully on May 19, 2023 at the age of 96, surrounded by her family in New Braunfels, Texas.

Charlotte was born January 6, 1927 to Silvanus Howard ("Jack") and Nettie Mae Coleman in Norton, Virginia. The second oldest of five children, Charlotte took her place as a natural born leader, which was a trait that followed her to becoming the beloved matriarch of the Coleman-Laughlin clan. After graduating high school in 1945, Charlotte took a job with the Department of the Army where she worked at Camp Rucker, meeting the love of her life Lt. Robert “Bob” Culpepper Laughlin. They married on April 10, 1954 and had two children: Jane and Robert Jr.

Above all else, Charlotte loved Jesus. This firm foundation of Christian values made her the best wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Charlotte and Bob were active members at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Rock Hill, SC where she sang in the choir for over fifty years. To be closer to family, Charlotte and Bob moved to New Braunfels, Texas, in 2014 and their new church home became First United Methodist Church New Braunfels.

No matter where she lived, Charlotte made a welcoming and loving home, delighting in cooking with fruits and vegetables from her garden. Her jars of pickles were greatly anticipated by all who knew her. One of Charlotte’s favorite activities was playing games, such as cards, crosswords, and Scrabble. She even had a long-running Scrabble game score total with her dear friend Lynn Hornsby, with a final score, after more than 40 years of games, of over 1.5 million and a difference in scores between these two fierce competitors of only 15,000!

Charlotte is survived by her husband Robert Laughlin, daughter Jane (Tom) Crowson, and son Robert (Charlene) Laughlin Jr.; four granddaughters: Jill (Damion) Scholz, Molly (Tom) Nichols, Kathryn Laughlin, and Stacey Laughlin; five great-grandchildren: Thomas “Trey” Nichols III, Brody Nichols, Asher Scholz, Keely Scholz, and Aliana Laughlin; and her sister Patricia (Joe) Willis. She is preceded in death by her parents, three siblings, and many dear friends and extended family members.

Her legacy will be her family, her faith, her home, her friends, and her love of life. In lieu of flowers, please grab a deck of cards or a Scrabble board and sit down with your family for a game or two in her honor. Nothing would have pleased her more.
