Kelly Mare Obituary

Kelly SuzAnne Mare, nee Smith, of Prairie Lea, Texas, formerly of West Frankfort, Illinois, died Monday afternoon, March 11, 2024 at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in San Marcos, Texas with her loving family surrounding her.

Suzy, as she was lovingly called, was born October 28, 1959 on what was her maternal grandmother’s 42nd birthday to James and Thera (Knight) Smith. At the time of her birth, her parents were living in Virginia Beach because her dad was serving in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Intrepid.

Years later the growing Smith family returned to their home state of Illinois. It was there that Suzy graduated from FCHS in West Frankfort, Illinois Class of 1977. She went on to higher education, graduating from SIU/Carbondale with a Bachelor in History. A life-long learner and educator, Suzy earned her Master’s in Education as well as her Ph.D. earning the title of Dr. Kelly Mare. It was during this time that Dr. Mare was teaching in Victoria, Texas. She had a love for history and wanted to share it with others.

Most recently she began experiencing increasing health issues but it didn’t stop her from showing an interest in her nephew Jimi Ray’s music, so much as she became his manager. Suzy was always present at all his gigs; clapping, cheering and singing along. Suzy was a loving presence, offering sage advice and honest critiques. Music was an integral part of her life. Her mother was a professional musician, growing up the house was full of singing and her mother’s beautiful piano playing.

Her strong faith in Jesus never wavered. Suzy believed that she would be restored to good health if that were His plan for her. She also had a strong devotion to Mary, Mother of God.

Suzy is survived by her two daughters; Thera and Kelly. Siblings; Paul Mosley, Mike (Donna) Mosley, Cindy, Rachel and James Smith, Jr. Nieces and nephews; Matthew Mosley, Melissa (Danny) Eikeberger, Loren, Anna, Claire and Jacob Knight, Thomas and Jimi Ray Rodriguez. Numerous great-nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends. As well as grand-cats and a grand-dog.

Suzy was preceded in death by her parents James and Thera Smith, an older brother David, an older sister Jo Carol and maternal and paternal grandparents.

The family would like to thank all the prayer warriors, doctors and nurses who took excellent care of their Suzy and Luling EMS who always came to the house.

A memorial service will be planned at a later date.

“For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord.” Jeremiah 30:17
